BlogChampions of Swagger: Joey Sheikh Champions of Swagger: Joey Sheikh Posted Date : Aug 21, 2025 At just 8 years old, Joey had already shown the world what strength, resilience, and kindness truly look like. Living with Parkinson’s at such a young age, he has faced challenges most people can’t imagine. But through it all, Joey’s courage, determination, and big heart shine brightly. Now at the age of 16, he’s preparing for deep-brain stimulation (DBS) surgery this year. Joey continues to inspire those around him. He never stops fighting, but what truly makes him remarkable is not just his determination – it’s his compassion. He is caring, thoughtful, and always looking out for others. The journey to diagnosis Joey’s journey with Parkinson’s began when he was very young. In kindergarten, his teacher noticed something unusual – he could no longer write his name, despite having been advanced academically. His family grew concerned and sought medical help. Initially, doctors tested for a brain tumour, but the results offered no answers. For 2.5 years, his family searched for clarity. Finally, genetic testing revealed the presence of the Parkinson’s gene. While the neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s primarily works with adults, Joey was referred to The Hospital for Sick Children, where his diagnosis could be confirmed and his care tailored. Along with Parkinson’s, Joey also lives with dystonia that affects his mobility. Through every uncertainty and challenge, he and his family have met the journey with courage and persistence. Finding joy and motivation Despite the physical hurdles, Joey finds joy in activities that keep him moving and connected. He loves basketball and even joined his high school team, though mobility challenges prevent him from playing the way he once did. Swimming has become another favourite – he participates in programs that help him stay active and confident in the water. But perhaps what motivates Joey most is the community around him. He has a strong, supportive group of friends who encourage him and celebrate his accomplishments. Their kindness mirrors his own, because Joey is the kind of person who lifts up everyone he meets. Looking ahead Though he doesn’t yet attend support groups, Joey and his family have connected with resources and information through Parkinson Canada. As he grows older, he plans to participate in groups that will connect him with others who share similar experiences. As he prepares for DBS surgery, Joey is facing a new chapter with the same resilience and bravery that have carried him this far. His journey is not just about challenges – it’s about the strength, kindness, and swagger that define who he is. Words of wisdom When asked what advice Joey and his family would share with others living with Parkinson’s or supporting a loved one, they had this to say: “Parkinson’s may change the way you move and the way you feel about your body, but it doesn’t define you. Don’t be afraid. You deserve a good life.” Share this post: Your Story Matters: Inspire and Connect Inspire hope and connect with others by sharing your Parkinson’s journey.
